“Uni Wheel”: Hyundai and Kia Present New Wheel-Hub Motor Concept

Hyundai Motor and Kia have presented a jointly developed wheel-hub motor concept that is suitable for both passenger cars and shuttle vehicles. The technology is also intended to allow use as a skateboard platform, serving as the basis for different body types.

Compact electric motor close to the wheel

As with other wheel hub concepts, the drive components are fully or partially integrated into the wheel rim, enabling greater efficiency and space savings. The precise torque distribution between the individual motors also improves the driving dynamics as well as the vehicle’s steering and driving stability. According to the manufacturers, a new feature of the system developed by Hyundai and Kia is that driving comfort is not impaired. The main components of the drive, such as the reduction gearbox, are moved into the free space in the wheel hub. In addition, a compact electric motor is placed close to the driven wheels, reducing the axial length of the drive shafts.

Constant power transmission from the motor to the wheels

A special planetary gearbox is used as a reduction gear, which enables the wheel to move up and down relative to the drive attached to the chassis. This mechanism allows constant power transmission from the engine to the wheels – regardless of how they move in relation to the chassis. The high reduction ratio of the planetary gearbox is said to deliver a considerable torque and thus enable the use of a smaller and more compact electric motor. The system is combined with air suspension, which increases ride comfort and has a positive effect on the service life and durability of the drive system.
