NIO Starts Production of 900-Volt Drive System

According to a report by automotive magazine “CarNewsChina”, Chinese electric car manufacturer NIO has started series production of its newly developed 900-volt drive system. The ET9 vehicle model, which was presented to the public for the first time in December 2023, is set to be the first to be launched on the market with the drive system that is also known as “Thunder”.

The drive concept is based on a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) with a maximum output of 340 kilowatts in the rear axle and an asynchronous motor with a maximum output of 180 kilowatts. According to NIO, the PMSM with a weight of 79 kilograms achieves a power density of 4.3 kilowatts per kilogram, while the asynchronous motor achieves a power density of 2.6 kilowatts per kilogram – the best value for asynchronous motors in the world to date, according to the company.

30% increase in continuous output

Overall, an increase in the degree of integration has resulted in the motors of the new drive system being 30% lighter and 280 millimeters shorter than those of the predecessor model. In addition, new 1,200-volt power electronics with a power density of 1,315 kilowatts per liter are used, in which semiconductors made of silicon carbide are installed. A revised cooling system for the drive units also ensures an increase in continuous output of almost 30%. Overall, the system is designed for more than 300,000 power cycles.
