Continental Develops All-in-One Sensor Concept

German automotive supplier Continental has developed a new rotary position sensor. The technology known as “eRPS” is based on the eddy current concept and can detect the exact position of the rotor in an electric synchronous motor. As an advantage over the existing resolver principle, eRPS no longer needs to be specially adapted, which means it can be used for various motors in the vehicle.

According to Laurent Fabre, Head of the Passive Safety and Sensorics at Continental, the innovation is an all-in-one sensor concept. The company claims that eRPS is 40% lighter than existing resolver sensors and is also extremely compact. This is in line with compact engine designs that the automotive industry is striving for these days. Production of the rotary position sensor is planned to start by the end of 2025.
