US-based BorgWarner Group plans to start manufacturing rotors and stators for electric motors for the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Xpeng in the third quarter of 2024. The new components will initially be used in the X9 MPV models Xpeng presented at the last Guangzhou Auto Show as well as in Xpeng’s next B-segment sedan, which has not yet been named.
According to BorgWarner, the HVH220 high-voltage hairpin electric motor, whose name is derived from the stator’s outer diameter of 220 millimeters, can be operated with up to 800 volts. The rotor uses permanent magnets and a proprietary technology which, according to the company, improves the stator insulation, thus ensuring a long service life and reliability. The maximum output is said to be 300 kilowatts, with the highest speed being 18,000 revolutions per minute and the maximum efficiency being 97%.
