Starting in 2025, BMW plans to produce the next generation of electric drives at its Steyr site in Austria. According to the car manufacturer, it is investing around one billion euros to equip BMW’s largest motor plant for the production and development of electric drives by 2030. The plant in Steyr produces engines for around one million vehicles per year.
Comprehensive component production
With the introduction of its “New Class” beginning in 2025, BMW expects a significant increase in the proportion of electric cars. According to the company’s plans, at least half of all BMW vehicles sold will be electrically powered by the end of the decade. All key components of the electric drive are to be manufactured at the Steyr plant – rotor and stator, gearbox, inverter and housing. There are plans to convert existing production areas and create new facilities for the assembly of electric drives and the production of power electronics. An expansion of the logistics facility is also planned.
Investment in development and expertise
By the end of the ramp-up, around 50% of the 4,400 people employed at the Steyr site will be working in the field of electric mobility, enabling the production of around 600,000 vehicles per year. According to BMW, the company plans to invest around 230 million euros in the development of high-performance electric drives by 2030. The proportion of developers in the field of electric mobility in BMW’s Steyr facility is set to rise to around 90 percent by 2030.
