The Renault plant in Cléon, France, has opened a new production line for electric motors. Through an investment of 620 million euros since 2018, the Cléon site had been developed by the Renault Group as a center for the production of electric and hybrid motors. By 2024, the plant is expected to have an annual production capacity of more than one million electric motors. Renault plans to switch completely to electric vehicles in Europe by 2030.
Better efficiency than a permanent magnet motor
The new electric motor with an output of 160 kilowatts, which was developed as part of the alliance between Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi, is to be used in Renault’s all-electric models. The machine is a synchronous motor with a wound rotor, which offers better efficiency than a permanent magnet motor. By dispensing with rare earths, the security of supply is improved. In addition, the environmental impact and production costs are limited. The motor is more compact and lighter than that of the Zoe model and offers higher power and torque. The production line for the engine has been modernized and made flexible, so that future annual production of 120,000 engines with a potential doubling to 240,000 engines is possible.
Introduction of the E-Mobility Academy
Meanwhile, Renault Group is offering its employees training in new electric professions to support the transition to electric mobility. For this purpose, the E-Mobility Academy was founded in Cléon as a campus for training the plant workforce. As part of the “Renouveau France 2025” plan, Renault is hiring an additional 100 new employees to support the transition to electric mobility.
