Bosch Starts Production of Electric Motors in South Carolina

Bosch has started production of electric motors for electric vehicles at its plant in Charleston, South Carolina. The company plans to invest a total of more than 260 million US dollars in expanding the manufacture of electrification products. The new production unit is to be housed in an existing building on Bosch campus in Charleston and will include the manufacture of rotors and stators as well as the final assembly of electric motors. However, Bosch did not disclose the type of electric motors involved.

Site expansion by 7,000 square meters

The existing production areas have been too small since another major order was placed. An expansion of the building by 7,000 square meters will therefore create space for future production. A further 350 jobs are also to be created there by the end of 2025. The plant in Charleston was previously used to produce diesel engine components, which is gradually phasing out since January 2020. In addition to electric motor production, Bosch is planning to build a production facility for fuel cell stacks in Anderson, South Carolina, with an investment volume of around 200 million US dollars and at least 350 newly created jobs. Production there is scheduled to start in 2026. To date, Bosch has invested more than six billion US dollars worldwide in the development of electric mobility and achieved a corresponding order intake of more than ten billion dollars in 2021.
